Since there are so many stories with the same components, I made a system of icons to help better identify the phenomena in each location:

phantom woman

phantom man

child's ghost

footsteps heard with no one there

lights turn themselves on and off

orbs, balls of light, or "spook lights" (a.k.a. will o’ wisps, earthquake lights, ball lightning, devil lights, and swamp ghosts)

odd scents or odors inconsistent with environment

cold spots / temperature changes are felt

ghost of an animal or animals

ghost in the toity (usually the ladies room)

benevolent (helpful) spirit

malevolent (evil, destructive) spirit; and/or poltergeist activity (flying objects, crashing sounds, etc)

ghostly music

phantom soldier

blame it on the mob (mafia related)

blame it on the red man ("built on an Ancient Indian Burial Ground" - A.I.B.G.)

dead actor/artist, drama queens even post-mortem

celebrity ghost

Gravity Hill

phantom ship

dead, grizzled old seafarer

establishment has closed down
